Solar Eclipse in India

KOCHI: A boatload of skywatchers set sail from Kochi for the Maldives on Wednesday to chase the 'Ring of Fire', or the millennium's longest

annular solar eclipse.

On board the M V Aquamarine, the country's first eclipse cruise, these tourists will be in a vantage position to catch the magical moment when the Sun's disc is covered by the Moon.

From veteran eclipse-chasers to first-timers, they were all set for the rare spectacle. Some were already busy figuring out the best viewing positions and trying to get their hands on solar filters. Chennai-based Brinda Reddy, who had boarded the Aquamarine with her family of four, said she was excited about indulging her passion for watching the heavens. ''This is my second eclipse and I am sure it will be even more magical than the first since we will see it from the water,'' she said.

The privilege came at a steep price — those on the eclipse cruise shelled out something between Rs 12,000 to Rs 50,000 for the four-day, three-night trip. There are 900 passengers on board the Aquamarine, which has docked in India only for the second time
